Imagine if you could get paid for chauffeuring your kids everywhere they needed to be. That would be a nice perk. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that, but there is a way to make that drive time more rewarding.
Here’s a simple little life hack that might make a big difference if you’re looking for ways to create more quality time with your kids. If you’re not already aware of this, our family spends a ton of time in the car traveling from event to event.
Between our many activities and responsibilities, sometimes we never get a chance to even ask our kids how their day went…and ACTUALLY listen to the answer. It’s just “go, go, go” till it’s time to go to bed. Then we get up and do it all over again.
So if your days feel like you’re running a chauffeur business and you’re left wondering, “how am I ever going to spend more quality time with my kids when I don’t have any time?” here’s an idea.
We’ve discovered that we can make drive-time, quality time. Think about it. You’re in your car and your kids are trapped. They can’t go anywhere. What better time to talk and catch-up on the day and about life in general?
It takes some effort and sometimes, depending on your kid, GREAT effort, but this can be some of the best quality time you will have with your kids. It just happens in small chunks.
You have to turn the music off, and of course, eliminate smartphones from the equation, but just think about how much you can learn about your child in those 10 or 15 minutes.
Just start by asking a question. Then listen! Sometimes it takes a little more prodding, but it works if you keep at it. We often have to ask very specific questions in order to get our younger boys to talk, but we’ve learned that if we keep at it, they eventually open up.
And we’ve also discovered they really enjoy talking about their day. The key is to listen intently and to keep asking questions. You can learn a lot about your kids this way. It will also strengthen your bonds with your children and reassure them of your deep love for them.
One more thing. Kids crave individual time with their parents. With six kids that is one of our greatest challenges. However, despite running them all over town, we often end up with just one kid in the car. Not sure how, but it happens a lot.
Anyways, this is a great opportunity to get in a little one-on-one time that your kids will really appreciate. It’s a great way to create more quality time and make you feel a little less like a chauffeur and more like a loving parent.
