To be fair, the coconut didn’t actually hurt me. It was really the knife I was using to extract the meat from the shell of the coconut that did the damage. So that’s how I began my day. It was about 9:00 am and Carol was about to take the two youngest boys to school.

I had plans to watch Apple’s big iPhone event so my next few hours were set. I didn’t have time to bleed.

But, I had barely started extracting the meat when it happened. “Oh crap.” I knew it was not just a minor cut I could fix with a Band-Aid. It immediately started bleeding and it wouldn’t stop. This was going to require a trip somewhere for professional medical attention. Nooooo. Not that!

After bleeding through several paper towels, we got some gauze and taped it up. Carol took the boys to school and what did I do? I continued extracting the meat from the coconut, of course. I mean, why not, right? I wasn’t going to leave for who knows how long and let my coconut meat go to waste.

A trip to the urgent care or ER is almost never quick. Am I right?

Anyways, I had already given my blood for this coconut so I wasn’t about to lose any of it. Thus, I kept digging away until Carol got back. She found an urgent care only a couple miles away that had no wait time. Wait, what? Yep, that’s right, their waiting room was actually empty.

So off we went to Legacy GoHealth Urgent Care, but only after I properly stored the coconut in the fridge. Priorities, right?

I have to admit; this is probably the best urgent care experience I’ve had.

I have been in other urgent care clinics that have moved quickly but it hasn’t always been the best care. At Legacy GoHealth it started as soon as you walked in the door. They had an iPad on a stand to start the registration process and then I continued it on my phone while waited.

And I didn’t have to give a complete medical history in order to be seen. I mean, seriously, why do we have to do that? Why does it matter if anyone in my family has ever had cancer or if I have had any surgeries in the last 10 years? I cut my finger with a knife, people. Let’s focus on the present. The iPhone X reveal was just moments away!

Anyways, the cool thing was as soon as I entered my name and a couple other pieces of info on the iPad my place in line was saved. They also had a large screen showing who my provider would be and a timer counting down my wait time, with a best and worst case scenario. That was awesome!

My time in the waiting room was short and then the fun stuff began. The cut was deep and as wide as my fingertip. I had to soak my finger in iodine for several minutes then the doctor came back to scrub it with a little brush, then with a rough sponge.

If that sounds painful, you’re right. It was. I’m not gonna lie; I winced. After that unpleasantness, I had to wrap my finger again and keep it elevated till the bleeding stopped. We finally rinsed it all off, then the doctor started squeezing it again. I’m not really sure why, but that made it bleed again.

Anyways, she said we could stitch it but I probably wouldn’t enjoy that. Agreed!

Instead, she covered it with Gelfoam. I had never heard of that before, but apparently, it helps the blood coagulate and can be a better option than the super glue doctors often use. But it actually looks nothing like foam.

It’s a little white wrap material that stuck to my skin. After applying the Gelfoam, the nurse wrapped my finger in gauze and taped it up. They put a splint on it as well just for added protection.

But the fun wasn’t done yet. I couldn’t remember the last time I had a tetanus shot (I do now), so I got one of those as a parting gift. It wasn’t too bad, though, and I even got a Sqidward Band-Aid because the nurse asked for Chloe’s Band-Aid preference.

So it was an unexpected start to the morning, but all-in-all it was a great experience at an urgent care, which you can almost never say in the same sentence. In fact, it went so quickly that every time I tried watching the Apple event on my phone, the staff interrupted me. That was a good thing.

But I did get home in time to see the big iPhone X reveal. So what would I have missed? “The most advanced iPhone Apple has ever made.” Duh. That’s what they do every year, right?

Oh, one more thing. I searched “coconut spoons” on Amazon when I got home because I had heard that such a tool exists. Sure enough, I found one called The Coconut Tool and watched it in action. I think it’s safe to say it would be a good idea to order one of these for future coconut meat extraction. It’s a lot cheaper than the new iPhone, too.
