Getting your kids to eat healthier is like trying to keep your auto insurance company from raising your rates for no reason.
I’m constantly trying to get my family to eat better, but my kids are like any other kids. They love sugar and they don’t really care how many times I tell them sugar is bad for them. I get where they’re coming from because I used to eat sugary things all the time.
I was once a candy junkie. However, the older – and hopefully wiser – I get, I’ve learned there’s an ugly side to sugar. So, I have given up some of my favorite things in an effort to be healthier.
Over time it has become easier and most of the time I’m not really tempted to eat sugary foods. But I do still like having something sweet after lunch and dinner. That’s a habit I don’t want to break.
The problem is I don’t really want anything with a lot of sugar. So what is a recovering sugar-junkie supposed to do? Well, if you’re looking for a great little treat that’s super simple to make and completely healthy here’s a great suggestion.
The credit for this idea goes to my sister-in-law, Rhonda. She’s a health and fitness enthusiast and fellow sugar-shunner. Whenever she and I talk, inevitably our conversations turn to the subject of how to live a healthier lifestyle. So thank you to Rhonda for this idea.
For this healthy and tasty treat, you’ll just need four things: a banana, a plate, wax paper and a knife. That’s it. Grab your plate or tray, lay down a piece of wax paper over the top of it then peel and slice your banana, spreading it on your plate.
Then, place the plate in the freezer and a short time later you’ll have a sweet frozen treat. It sounds too simple, right? I don’t know why but freezing the bananas makes them so much tastier. I don’t really like bananas in general, but these frozen banana slices are delicious.
Our kids love them, too. In fact, one of our boys strongly dislikes bananas, but even he will scarf down several slices every time we make them.
Just two other small things to remember to ensure they turn out just right. First, it’s best to let the bananas get ripe before you use them. It’s even ok to let them get slightly too ripe, depending on your personal taste buds. But this makes them that much sweeter when they come out of the freezer.
Lastly, and this is the most important key to enjoying this treat. Don’t wait too long to eat them after you stick them in the freezer. The longer they stay in the less satisfying they get. I like them best right after they freeze, but they are generally still tasty for several hours.
Of course, personal preference plays a role in this, as well. Another one of our boys will gladly still eat them two or three days after they went in the freezer. So it all depends on the person. Not my cup of tea, but at least they don’t go to waste.
Anyways, there you have it: a tasty and healthy treat that’s simple to make and easy to enjoy. I suppose you could even melt some chocolate on them before you freeze them, but that might ruin the “healthy” part of the snack. Perhaps, dark chocolate? Hmm, I wonder if we have any bananas in the house?
